The “Commons” will offer wheel-chair accessible trails that wind along the perimeter and intersect the organic help-yourself vegetable gardens. These gardens will allow the Women’s Health Resource Library to significantly expand its hugely successful Incredible Edible Milbridge project. We anticipate doubling our annual produce harvest to 6,000 pounds. A community orchard will enhance the Incredible Edible offerings with the addition of apples, pears and berries.
Milbridge Commons will include a natural play area for children, which will be the first public play space for families in our town. It will provide an amphitheater for community performances as well as natural areas for quiet reflection, bird watching, picnicking, and enjoyment of the pristine views of the bay. There will be shore access to a small sand beach.
The property will also accommodate field trips and outdoor classroom experiences for local schools, expanding our existing Incredible Edible program at the Milbridge Elementary School.
This innovative park will be available in all seasons and to all ages. Milbridge Commons will be a place to work, learn, and harvest, but also a place for recreation, quiet contemplation and healing.
We have created a phased development plan. Phase One will begin in fall 2017 and finish in summer 2018. This phase will include property infrastructure (grading, drainage, parking, and water), the outer loop walking trail, the vegetable gardens, the children’s play area, and the maintenance shed.
Future phases include:
- Phase 2 – Amphitheatre Seating and Orchard ($320,000)
- Phase 3 – Nautilus Terrace, Gazebo and Great Lawn ($212,000)
- Phase 4 – Meditation Labyrinth ($106,000)
- Sculptures/Land Art – in any phase ($49,000)
Please make your gift today and support this first phase, which is the important first step in transforming the health and vitality of this beautiful Downeast community.
